Modra, Slovak Folk Majolica, is handcrafted in the tradition of Eastern Europe’s oldest ceramists, known as the Habans. Their exquisite craft developed into the region’s quintessential folk artform in the seventeenth century.
The original pottery was decorated exclusively with flowers and leaves because of the religious restrictions on their craft. By the late 1600’s, as these religious foundations began to falter, animals, humans and architectural motifs were added to the decorator’s repetoire.
A few decades later, Slovak and Moravian folk pottery absorbed the Habaner technique and emerged as a valued folk artform in itself. Today, in the small Slovak village of Modra, the relationship endures between the seventeenth century Habaner artists and contemporary ceramists
