Rostov (Yaraslavl Region) has always been the manufacturing center of copper-based painted jewelry. The works of Rostov masters are all done in this manner. The art of enamel, a form which is called "Finift" in Russian, is characterized by a monochrome background (white, black, blue or pink) and bright multicolored patterns. The exquisite paintings are always delicate; they are invariably in harmony with the design of the jewelry, whose settings are either works of filigree or rich sculpture. The style of painting reflects the artists attitude to their work in such aspects as manner of execution, lustre, purity of enamels, intensity of color, as well as its depth and transparency.
Numerous motifs of enamel paintings are inspired by landscapes of Russian nature (particularly its flora), heroic and lyric Russian lore and the majestic old-Russian architecture of Rostov-Veliky. Miniature portraits occupy a special place; they are true to life, historically authentic and reveal the inner world of the personality.
Although it has its origins in Rostov, "finift" has become a treasured occupation of other regions, including St.-Petersburg, Moscow, et. al. Each region has made its own distinctive contribution to the form. Enamel jewelry made in Perm, for example, has its own unique characteristics. The artists in this Ural city have a preference for pure red, brown, and green colors.
From wherever it may come "finift" is an heirloom- and treasure, which deserves its own place among the accessories of American women.
